Oliver defines characters through the parallel of chess, Middle-earth being the game board. From knights to the king, context is provided as to why the pieces of the game correspond with the Lord of the Rings characters. He then goes to argue against his claims, pointing out the flaws that lie with pinning characters against each other in a two-sided game.
