Printed with permission from “The Times”, this article notes the life and passing of Professor John Ronald Reul Tolkien. He was born on January 3rd, 1892, in Bloenfontein, South Africa. He was homeschooled by his mother until 1903 where he was admitted to King Edward’s School. Through his years he gained an exceptional grasp on the English language and began to teach English and repurpose old English stories into plain text – including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Beowulf. He also published his own books – namely, the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
